Accountants in Manchester

Accountants in Manchester for businesses that need the answer before the decision

Accountants in Manchester, working remotely with owner-managed service businesses, agencies and grant-funded organisations across Greater Manchester that need monthly numbers rather than accounts arriving nine months after the event.

Most owners here can tell you last year’s profit. Far fewer can tell you, this afternoon, whether the next hire covers itself or which retainer is quietly the worst work in the building. That gap is where the expensive decisions get made.

Ardein is an outsourced finance function for owner-managed businesses and grant-funded organisations in Manchester, run remotely by Gavin Jardine MIAB from a Chester base. It covers bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, year-end accounts and monthly management information, with fees scoped to the work after seeing the records. Handover from a current accountant is managed at no separate charge.

Three answers you would have before the next decision

01

Know whether the next hire pays for itself

Monthly figures show what a new salary has to bill before it stops costing you cash.

02

See which clients and jobs carry the margin

Income and cost are coded by job, so the thin work stops hiding inside the total.

03

Answer a funder or a bank the same week

The records are current, so the evidence comes out of the system rather than out of a weekend.

The decisions Manchester owners make without the number

Three things clients have told me in the first meeting, and what each one actually cost.

  • Hire

“We took on two more people in January because the pipeline looked strong. By April I was funding payroll out of the VAT money.”

The pipeline was strong and the cash was still wrong. Nobody had mapped the new salaries against when that work would invoice.

  • Price

“We had not moved our day rate in three years. When we finally did it, we put it up across every client at once.”

Two good accounts left over a rise that only two contracts needed. Margin by client would have shown which ones to leave alone.

  • Contract

“We won a big city centre retainer and it turned out to be the least profitable work we had on.”

Delivery hours were never costed against the fee. It ran eleven months before the year-end accounts made it visible.

  • Day 90

What it looks like when the answer is in the room

By day ninety the books are current, so a question asked on Tuesday is answered on Tuesday. You can see cash, debtors, creditors and margin by client without commissioning anything. The hire, the rate rise and the new contract get decided in an afternoon. Nothing important waits for the year end.

Quick check · no email

If your accountant in Manchester cannot tell you this week whether the next hire, the rate rise or the new contract is affordable, you have the wrong accountant

Three questions about your current accountant, answered yes or no.

Question 1 of 3

Could they tell you by this afternoon whether you can afford another salary?

A year-end accountant and a monthly answer are not the same purchase

Both have a job. Only one of them is any use on the day you have to decide.

A year-end accountant

Files the accounts and the corporation tax return correctly and on time.

Keeps Companies House and HMRC satisfied, which matters.

Sees the year once it is finished and cannot change it.

Answers the hiring question with figures from last spring.

A finance function that answers this week

Bookkeeping kept current, so the numbers are already there when you ask.

Monthly management information on cash, debtors, creditors and margin.

A same-day answer on a purchase, a price or a contract, with the reasoning.

Year end becomes a confirmation of what you already knew.

Eight questions worth answering before your next big decision

Yes or no. The noes are the ones that cost money.

  • 01

Do you know today’s cash position without opening the bank?

If not, every purchase decision is a guess.

  • 02

Can you say which client made you the most money last month?

Revenue by client is common. Margin by client is what decides pricing.

  • 03

Do you know what a new hire has to bill to cover themselves?

That figure should exist before the advert goes out.

  • 04

Is your corporation tax liability visible before it falls due?

It should be forecast, not discovered.

  • 05

Do you know who owes you money and for how long?

A debtor list older than a week is a cash problem waiting.

  • 06

Could you evidence a grant or funding claim this week?

Funders are asking for detail that only current records can produce.

  • 07

Has anyone checked that everything delivered was invoiced?

Uninvoiced work is the most expensive thing bookkeeping finds.

  • 08

Do your monthly reports arrive on the same date every month?

A timetable is what makes the numbers usable rather than interesting.

What changes in the first ninety days, and when you feel it

Four markers, each one an answer you can get that you could not get before.

Before day one

You stop chasing your old accountant

Scope agreed, AML checks done, records obtained. We deal with the outgoing provider.

Day 30

Your cash position is finally accurate

Bookkeeping complete, banks reconciled, debtor and creditor balances that make sense.

Day 60

Nothing waits on you to remember it

Routines set for bills, credit control, payroll and reporting, with checks in place.

Day 90

A decision takes an afternoon, not a quarter

Monthly management information on the agreed date, and a same-day answer between reports.

Who this does not work for

We do not take on cash businesses.

We do not take on construction work that depends on CIS.

We walk away from anything illegal or reportable, including falsified VAT records.

It does not work when an owner cannot explain their own business or say what they need.

If none of that applies, the review will tell you quickly whether we are the right fit.

Questions Manchester owners ask first

Is the review just a sales call?

No. It is a paid review with a defined output: a look at your bookkeeping and reporting workflow, debtors and creditors, payroll and systems, then the five things to fix first and an indicative monthly structure. The fee is credited in full against onboarding if you go ahead, and you keep the findings if you do not.

We already have an accountant in Manchester. Is it worth talking to you?

Most of our clients had one. The usual position is that the year-end filing is fine and there is no month-by-month support, so decisions about hiring, pricing and contracts get made on old figures. If your current accountant answers the three questions above, stay where you are.

What happens with our current accountant if we switch?

Ardein manages it. We handle professional clearance, contact your existing accountant or bookkeeper, collect the records and agree a transition plan around your year end. There is no separate charge for the normal handover. You are not asked to referee the conversation or chase anyone for files.

Are we tied into a long contract?

No long tie-in. We agree a monthly fee scoped to the work once we have seen the records and understood how the business runs, and it is reviewed as the business changes. Capacity is capped at four new clients a month, so start dates are agreed rather than assumed.

Do accountants in Manchester need to be based in Manchester?

Not for this kind of work. Ardein is a remote practice run from Chester, with clients across Greater Manchester, Stockport and Altrincham as well as the rest of the UK. There is no Manchester office. Everything runs on Xero, by phone, email and video, Monday to Friday, nine to five.

Do you work with CICs and grant-funded organisations in Greater Manchester?

Yes. For CICs and charities the monthly work usually covers bookkeeping with fund tracking, payroll, a monthly evidence and board pack, year-end accounts and the CIC or charity filings. Funders are asking for more detail on where money went, and that is easier to supply when the records are current.
